Please understand that volunteer work is not free. It entails costs for the volunteers. Almost no international volunteer group in the world can afford to feed and house volunteers without cost let alone to pay them. Volunteers are responsible for all of their transportation costs to and from project sites. They are also responsible for their food and housing costs as well as any materials costs. And they are responsible for a very modest fee to Mano Amiga. These costs are always as low as possible and are very affordable compared with the costs of other international volunteer programs.
At present, Mano Amiga can accept applications for volunteer mission work in the Chuburná area of Yucatán, México, from church, school and community groups. The composition of these groups varies greatly and have included family groups with small children as well as elderly individuals. The construction work is difficult, but other jobs need doing on any project...jobs such as kitchen help; drivers; medical, first aid or EMT personnel; translators; musicians; photographers/videographers/journalists; and spiritual leaders. However, the accomidations and services are quite basic by many US standards. There are no provisions for the handicapped.
Representatives of church, school or community groups who wish to discuss the possibilities of participation or who wish to "tag-along" with another group to see if this mission work suits their group needs should contact Tom Thiets for the Yucatán or Sandy Kotval for the Frontera (Border).
There are currently no provisions for individuals, couples, families or unorganized small groups in Chuburná. Individuals, couples, families or unorganized small groups wishing to volunteer at the border at Casa Mano Amiga in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, should contact Pastor Juan Mauricio directly.
Individuals, couples, families or unorganized small groups wishing to volunteer in the Valladolid region of the Yucatán should contact Denis Larsen directly. Our facilities in Valladolid are wheelchair friendly, but the town of Valladolid presents many challenges to the physically handicapped. However, in Valladolid there is the opportunity for both off-site and on-site volunteer projects.
Medical, dental, prosthetic, and other health-related professionals who wish to initiate or participate in short-term clinics in Quintana Roo, Yucatán, Chiapas or Coahuila in México or the Iquitos area of Peru may contact Denis Larsen
